The Story Behind This Print
From Dust to Bloom
Bessie Coleman's Sky
Bessie Coleman (1892–1926) dreamed of flying but was rejected by every flight school in America because of her race and gender. She taught herself French, traveled to Paris, and in 1921 became the first African American woman — and through her Cherokee and African American heritage, the first Native American woman — to earn an international pilot's license. She refused to perform at segregated venues. Our print fills the sky with biplanes, propellers, aviator goggles, compass roses, and cloud formations on deep indigo.
"Told 'no' by every school in America. Took her license in Paris. Wear the sky she earned."
