The Story Behind This Print

From Dust to Bloom

Campfire Night Toile

On the Chisholm Trail, the campfire was the only living room a cowboy knew. Three figures around a dying fire — one plays guitar head bowed, one pours coffee, one reclines against a saddle gazing at the stars. Frederic Remington painted these nocturnal scenes in the 1890s; we translate them into a reversed toile — bright etched lines on deep black, like an astronomical chart come alive. Sparks rise to merge with Orion's belt overhead.

The best stories are told when the fire's almost out.

Frederic Remington, nocturne paintings (1890s); Charles M. Russell, Laugh Kills Lonesome (1925).
