The Story Behind This Print

From Dust to Bloom

Frontier Schoolteacher

Thousands of young women — many just 17 to 25 years old — left New England to teach in one-room schoolhouses across the western frontier from the 1840s through the 1890s. They earned a fraction of a man's salary and taught children to read in sod houses and log cabins. Our print honors their dedication with chalkboards, red apples, brass school bells, pencils, and one-room schoolhouse silhouettes on warm bone denim.

"She taught a generation to read the country they lived in. Wear the alphabet that built a democracy."
