The Story Behind This Print

From Dust to Bloom

Pennsylvania Hex Bloom

When German-speaking settlers arrived in Pennsylvania in the 17th and 18th centuries, they brought their folk art traditions with them. The colorful rosettes, tulips, and distelfink birds they painted on barn walls became known as hex signs — purely decorative symbols of good fortune rooted in Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, not religious practice. Our print scatters these joyful motifs across deep indigo: rosette flowers, distelfink birds, tulips, hearts, and vine tendrils.

"She brought her grandmother's patterns across an ocean. Three generations later, they bloom on American barns. Wear the bloom."
